SMART GREEN COUNCIL

The Smart Green Council continues to work on developing informational pieces for our industry, lawmakers, and the home buying public. Look for the Council’s “How Green Do You Want to Be? Buying New Is Buying Green” article in the Parade of Homes magazine. The Council is also working on developing educational opportunities for our members to provide them with a better understanding of products and methods they can use to meet the requests of home buyers. In addition, the Council is developing a Green Toolbox which will be accessible from the HBA website. It is anticipated that there will be specific areas with resources for development, construction, and marketing along with consumer information and emerging technologies.

Mission statement: To ensure housing affordability by providing credible and knowledgeable information and resources to members, consumers, regulators and legislators resulting in support for voluntary and cost-effective solutions to homebuyers’ demand for green building and design.

The goal of the Smart Green council is to improve the building environment through education by advocating freedom of choice for the buyer and builder in the area of green building. We promote voluntary, market-driven solutions as opposed to politically-driven mandates. We encourage green building, development and design that make environmental sense and economic sense. There must be a business case for both.

We have begun developing fact sheets and promotional materials about green building and development practices and would like your input since we will be developing for your use with customers, regulators and elected officials in order to help all of these groups understand both the issue and what our industry has and continues to do to be “green.”

There will be on-going discussions about green elements of developments, the evolution of green elements in buildings from builders, and a review and overview comparison of the current local and national programs to be used to possibly develop an informational piece for members considering building green.

Please send John Kisiel at HBA an email if you are interested in participating or send your information regarding your green materials and methods.

Our next meeting will be October 21st, 2008 at 9:30 am at HBA.
